Evidence based research makes clear links between concept and spatial development and educational outcomes for students with vision impairment. Their ability to efficiently gather information from the environment and to use this information purposefully impacts on their ability to access areas of the curriculum.

Orientation & Mobility (O&M) services have now been regionalised. This change provides an opportunity to focus on the Metropolitan Region, building capabilities of support staff and developing orientation and mobility (O&M) plans tailored to improve O&M outcomes for our metropolitan students with vision impairment.

Many students at Narbethong Special School have worked closely with the O&M teachers in the past. These specialist teachers work with groups of students with the aim of up-skilling all staff who are in contact with students with a disability, to provide consistent instruction to allow the student to use their senses more effectively. This allows the student to become more aware of their surroundings and enables them to move around an environment safely and confidently.

The O&M team based at Narbethong provides outreach services throughout the metropolitan region.

For more information about this service, please email OandM@narbethongspecs.eq.edu.au or alternatively contact us.
